A Historical Overview – Milestones of Polish Automotive Innovation and Icons from Behind the Iron Curtain

The roots of automotive exhibitions at the Poznań International Fair date back to the 1950s. At that time, it was the only place where the wonders of automotive technology could be admired. Both Polish and international manufacturers showcased their latest creations, which, in those days, were the stuff of dreams for many car enthusiasts.

Where else could one see prototypes of the Syrena and Warszawa before their final versions hit the streets of Poland? Naturally, at the Poznań International Fair. The Polish automotive industry had a strong presence there, with iconic vehicles like the Warszawa, Syrena, Nysa, Mikrus, Star, Osa scooters, and Ursus tractors all on display.

However, it was the foreign vehicles that stole the spotlight. At a time when access to foreign products was severely limited, the presence of international manufacturers offered visitors a rare glimpse into the global automotive world, and for car lovers, it was a true treasure. Mercedes, Fiat, and BMW were the biggest and most eagerly anticipated stars of the fair in the mid-20th century.

The exhibition featured such automotive jewels as the Jaguar E-Type and the Mercedes 300 SL, which drew many prominent personalities. Only a select few could not only admire these cars but also drive away from the fair in a brand-new vehicle from a foreign brand. And this was just the start of a long list of international “guests” at the event. Czechoslovak Skodas, East German Trabants, Volvo models, and cars from the USSR and Yugoslavia added to the rich, diverse collection of foreign exhibits.

A New Era – International Automotive Fairs and the Poznań Motor Show

Since 1992, the automotive fair has evolved into a standalone event under the International Automotive Fair banner. The inaugural edition featured an impressive array of models, including the Alfa Romeo 155, Honda CRX, BMW 3 Series Coupe, and the Polish debut of the Fiat Cinquecento.

This format continued until 1999, when a competition was held to rebrand the event. The winning name, Poznań Motor Show, debuted the following year with a revitalized concept. Despite a successful launch, the event was paused in 2003 due to the automotive industry's crisis.

Poznań Motor Show made a spectacular return in 2010, firmly establishing itself on the MTP Group’s event calendar and becoming one of Europe’s premier automotive events.
